How long does it take to mediate a divorce resolution?

On Behalf of | Aug 17, 2018 | Divorce Mediation |

When many hear that word “mediation,” they often think of a long, drawn out way of working through differences. Few think of it as a quick-fix solution for resolving them. While certain matters may be so complex that mediation does drag out for an extended period of time, negotiating the end of most people’s divorces doesn’t require this.

Divorces that tend to take the longest to resolve through mediation are those where a couple has been married for an extended period of time or have young kids. Other ones that tend to drag out are those where there are large amounts of property to divide up or there are pensions that necessitate a qualified domestic relations order (QRDO) being put into place.

Situations in which one spouse is against moving forward with the divorce or one or both of them has pent-up emotions toward the other may also slow mediation. A lack of full disclosure of finances can impact the negotiations of a settlement also.

Couples who tend to move fastest through the divorce mediation process tend to be those without minor children to fight over or who have long been separated and no longer carry emotional baggage. Couples who were married for a short period of time or who have previously worked with a mediator tend to move quickly through the divorce mediation process, too.

Mediation is a particularly effective approach for resolving those pesky issues that you two never seem to be able to come to a final resolution about. What’s also great is that if you try mediation and decide that it’s not right for you, then you can always resort to litigating your concerns instead. If you’re ready for a new approach to brokering an end to your marriage, then a Fort Myers divorce mediation attorney can help.
