There are many types of alimony

On Behalf of | Sep 1, 2016 | Alimony |

As you go through a divorce, you’ll be faced with many questions. At some point, you may wonder if you’re in position to receive alimony from your former spouse. While spousal support is not required by law in Florida, you may find that you are in position to fight for this type of payment.

Many people believe that all types of alimony are the same, however, this isn’t true. There are many types of alimony, all of which could be considered during your divorce. Here are some of the most common arrangements:

— Permanent support. As the name implies, this is when one person pays the other alimony for the rest of his or her life.

— Rehabilitative alimony. The purpose of this arrangement is for one person to provide the other support as they take steps, such as earning a degree, which will allow him or her to support him or herself in the future.

— Bridge the gap alimony. This helps in the event that one spouse needs money to “bridge the gap” from married life to being single. In this case, the court often approves of making a lump sum payment.

Do you have reason to believe your former spouse should be paying you alimony? If you want to receive this type of compensation, you need to take all the right steps at the right time.
