Woman gets enormous divorce settlement in Florida

On Behalf of | Dec 1, 2015 | High Asset Divorce |

Getting a divorce is never fun and it seems the older you get and the longer you are married, the more complex it becomes. This is the case for an 87-year-old man. His wife of 15 years got a divorce from the man after he developed the symptoms of dementia. She was awarded $9.75 million. The children of the man agreed to this amount.

It goes without saying that part of this payment will be valuable property that belonged to both of the people getting a divorce. Art work, furnishings and jewelry along with various homes in New York and Florida. The settlement, which this is, was forced on the woman after the man’s children from his first marriage said that she was abusing him. The woman says she felt backed into a corner by them and only divorced him because they were being pushy.

Because the man’s dementia continued on its course and got worse over a year’s period, the man no longer recognized his wife. This is because the children decided that no contact was to happen between the two individuals.

The woman’s attorney stated that she is getting what she deserves; that she is getting what is rightfully hers in this marriage. Her lawyer says that the man wanted her to have these assets and she is going to be able to live in the same manner that she was used to living in when she and her husband were together.

The two children of the man engaged in 11 separate legal battles and will remain their father’s guardians for their father and his estate. They reside in New York while their father is housed in Florida.

If you are facing a divorce, getting your ducks in a row now can save you so much strife later. Calling in a legal professional who can fill in the gaps for you can be invaluable at a time like this.
