What to Bring To The Initial Consultation

Different Documentation For Different Cases

When assessing your family law case, the more information we have, the better. During the initial consultation, the attorney will review these items to determine your options and provide you with advice specific to your case. These documents are not required on your first visit, but will help your attorney evaluate your case and give you the best advice.

If possible, please bring the following documents to your initial consultation:

All Cases:

  • A list of questions that you have for the attorney
  • Driver’s license
  • Any court documents/orders
  • Have you been served? Bring all court papers, including out-of-state orders and domestic violence injunctions.

Divorce Cases:

  • Durable family power of attorney — This includes any document that exists that permits the other party to open/close bank accounts, transfer title to real estate, etc. We may want to revoke this authority immediately.
  • List of assets and liabilities for both parties
  • Written agreements
  • IRA beneficiary designations — You may wish to change any beneficiary designations before filing for divorce.
  • Life insurance beneficiary — You may wish to change any beneficiary designations before filing for divorce.
  • Living will/health care surrogacy agreements — You may wish to change your living will and/or health care surrogacy agreements before filing for divorce.

Changes to Child Support/Parenting/Alimony:

  • Written agreements
  • All proof of payments related to support/alimony

Paternity:

  • Any written agreements
  • All proof of payments related to support of the child/children
  • Birth certificate for child/children related to this case

Wills:

  • Current will
  • Durable family power of attorney
  • Living will/health care surrogacy agreements
  • Any other estate planning documents you may have
  • Names and addresses of individuals named in your documents

Preparing Prenuptial/Postnuptial Agreements:

  • List of assets and liabilities for both parties
  • Any legal contracts that you may have with the other person

Domestic Violence:

  • Police reports
  • Witness information — names and addresses
  • Any court records for prior injunctions/domestic violence cases
  • Photos or evidence
