Concerned about cost? Consider a pay-as-you-go attorney

Many people are worried about cost when they look into divorces and the expenses that can pile up because of them. It can be overwhelming to hear someone say that a divorce cost them thousands of dollars, for example.

There are ways to handle the costs associated with divorce, though, if you know where to look. Many attorneys will set up payment plans or help with financing. Others work with the "pay-as-you-go" method.

Why choose a pay-as-you-go attorney?

A pay-as-you-go attorney is one who accepts payments for individual services as needed. Not all people need an attorney to hold their hand throughout the process of divorce, for example, so they may want to purchase just a few hours of time from an attorney to make sure their legal documents are in order.

Here's an example. If James and Julie are getting a divorce and already know how they'll divide their property, they might hire their attorney for an hour or two to go over their decision and to draw up the appropriate legal documents to make the decision binding. Instead of having an attorney for many hours while negotiating, the couple may only need a few hours of an attorney's time.

Bundled attorney support is similar to bundling television, internet and phone service together. You might already have a cellphone and only want internet and television, but you have to buy the entire package to get the deal. That's sometimes how attorneys' offices work, too. If you already have a phone, why would you pay for another line of service? That's the same line of thinking with a bundled program from an attorney.

Unbundled services are a great choice for those who want to save money and do a lot of their divorce work on their own. Someone who might want to consider this would be someone with legal training, for example, who just wants someone in the field to review their documents and make sure that everything has been done in accorandance with current laws.

Whether you choose bundled or unbundled services, you should expect to receive the best support throughout your divorce. Your attorney should have your undivided attention throughout your sessions, so that they can help you quickly and effectively. If you have your documents in order and are ready to move forward, or even if you just need help with one or two aspects of your case, unbundled services can be a good choice.
