Meeting the requirements for divorce in Florida

On Behalf of | Oct 10, 2015 | High Asset Divorce |

When you are getting a divorce, not only are you emotionally vulnerable, you are financially vulnerable as well. The law office of Thompson Family Law, P. A., knows this and has a goal to keep you are protected during the divorce proceedings. We will listen carefully to your story and will tell you what options are available under the laws of the state of Florida. There are many issues that come up in a divorce, such as child custody, child support and spousal support. We are experienced in these areas and can guide you through the maze that is seemingly engulfing you at this time.

We are a no-fuss law firm but will do whatever it takes to protect your rights. Since Florida is a no-fault divorce state, neither party involved has to place blame for the breakdown of the marriage. The most common grounds for divorce are that the marriage is irretrievably broken and cannot be mended. The court will allow you to get a divorce because no amount of counseling or even medical help will allow it to be saved. One avenue that some people take is to prove that the other party in the marriage is mentally incompetent and has been so for at least three years.

There is a residency requirement in order to get a divorce in Florida. One of you must have been a resident of the state of Florida for at least six months before you can even apply for a divorce. This applies to military members as well. We will file the petition for a dissolution of marriage on your behalf as soon as this residency requirement is met. You do not have to be legally separated in order to begin the divorce proceedings so this is one obstacle that you hurdle without many problems. Calling us in early on can be good for the outcome of your divorce
